The Hindustan Times' Career Quotient program for students of class 10

Students of class 10 underwent The Hindustan Times Career Quotient program in 2 steps, namely,

1.Aptitude-Interest –Personality Testing: Knowing oneself is an essential part of deciding a career.

Aptitude – is one’s ability in a given area. The test measured 7 aptitudes, i.e. Mechanical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Language Usage, Spatial Relations, Perceptual Speed Accuracy and Word knowledge.

Interest – measured a student’s 'like' or 'dislike' for the work involved in an occupation. The occupations were grouped in several clusters based on similar job functions. Clusters included Business Communication, Service, Science, Outdoor, Communication, Arts, and Technology etc.

Personality –measured the students' for personality traits essential for various occupations. Traits' measures are Investigative, Practical, Social, Leadership, Orderliness, Independence, Aesthetic etc.

This 90 – minute online test constituted 3 independent tests which the students took in a single session. In 3 working days the students received detailed personalized career-reports, also made available online.

2.Group-Explanation of the Assessment Report for the students.

Ms. Parveen Shaikh, Head psychologist from YoungBuzz, the specialists who conducted the exercise interacted with the students on 3 November, 2011 in the audio-visual room. The assessment reports were clarified to help the students recognise their strengths and sight suitable opportunities in order that they seek to make informed career decisions from the myriad options open to them. It was explained that it is vital to understand which field will have promise 10 years ahead, for example, looking at escalating petrol prices, petrochemical-engineering is most likely to be will be one of the most sought-after career 10 years from now.

Students themselves exhibited enthusiasm and enquiry during the counselling and were extremely curious to understand their assessments. It helped to have introduced the subject even whilst the pressure of boards is not immediately upon them. They freely interacted to seek answers to possibilities they were thinking of.

The birthdays of the children which fall in October and November were celebrated with an opportunity for them to share with other children, just as old, but not as privileged. On the afternoon of 11 November, 2011, about 20 children in the 3 to 5 years' age-group from the Delhi Council of Child Welfare's, 'Palna' were invited to a birthday party at our School.

Our little guests with their accompanying care-givers came bang on time and were welcomed with music as they were ushered into the play area. The visitors were expectedly hesitatant to start with in unfamiliar surroundings, but this soon dissipated as our children, their hosts, prompted them to come and mount their favourite swings. Innovative races followed like “Musical Island”, “Spoon & Beads' race, “Hat race” and “Balloon race”. The parents, teachers and Palna volunteers loudly cheered the efforts of the little athletes and the excitement was infectious. For a few special moments, adults and children alike were lost as it were, in a refreshing innocence!

A table-load of goodies-to-eat followed. There was birthday cake, wafers and cheese straws and juice. The cake was cut to a loud and customary " Happy Birthday to.." even as our music teacher, Mr. Pancham dug deep his keys on his casio.

Before long, the evening drew to a close and each birthday- child handed out a gift to each little guest. Each of them seemed to delight in the act of 'giving' and not once did any child resist. We were extremely elated to see that our children, not once asked to receive a gift themselves! Infact they were delightfully surprised when they received unexpected gifts which we had carefully wrapped for them. They definitely deserved their gifts and we, their teachers felt reassured in our success at our first initiation!

EXUN 2011

On 19 November, 2011, the computer department took 10 students from classes 10 -11 to participate in the Annual Computer Inter-school Festival, EXUN at Delhi Public School, R.K.Puram. It was invigorating to see students of our host school, independantly handling the event with volunteers dressed in special 'EXUN tee-shirts' for easy identification! The events were Swat the Bug, Creative Event, Senior and Junior Quiz, Group Discussion etc. The guests were also shown a film created in Adobe After-effects by the EXUN clan. More than 20 schools participated in the event and even whilst we anxiously awaited the results, we were delighted to have had the exhiliarating experience of being in the midst of peers, discovering as it were, together, new horizons of computer-science.

‘Reverberation’, An inter-school competition, 22 November, 2011.

‘Reverberation’, An inter-school competition, 22 November, 2011

An inter-school competition, Reverberation was held at Tagore International School ( East of Kailash). The event had 4 different categories of contest, namely, Music Melody, Pot-painting, Comic Strip creation and Digital Image Mixing.

The music competition was for classes 4 and 5 and the contestants were to present an Indian folk song. 18 schools participated in this event at which our School took the second prize with their entry, ‘Nandbabaji ko chhaiya’, a traditional folk song from Uttar Pradesh, popularly called Brajbhumi. Our choir comprised 12 students of class 5 including the accompanyists on the harmonium, tabla and and tambourine. The students were awarded a trophy.

The following students participated. Singing: Bhaavya Mahajan, 5B; Sachin Suna, 5A; Ayushi Teza, 5C; Aatif Hussain, 5B, Ayushmita Roy, 5D; Aastha Mohapatra, 5D; Milanpreet Kaur, 5D; Aditya Sharma, 5A; Sharanya Sai, 5B; Reet Kohli, 5A; Meghna Navariya, 5B and Srijony Das, 5E. Accompanists on the instruments were: Aueshik Das, 7B ( harmonium), Sanatan Shrivastava, 6D ( tabla) and Keshav Narayan, 6D ( tambourine).

The theme for the Digital Image Mixing event was ‘ Colours of India’ and the contestants were expected to to design a poster on
the same. Ansh Kumar and Manik Narula, both of XB, here too took the Second position with their kaleidoscopic poster depicting the rich and diverse heritage of India. They use photoshop CS3 for the purpose.

Report On Navodaya National Integration Meet , 2011

The Department of School Education and Literacy, ( Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India), organised the Navodaya National Integration Meet, 2011 on 11 November at the India Islamic Centre on Lodhi Road. The Minister of Human Resource Development Mr. Kapil Sibal was the Chief Guest on the occasion.

At the meet our students participated in a 'Student Seminar', the theme for which was ' Hope Through Education'. Our Aishwarya Tewary, class 11 and Pranati, class 9 presented their view and ideas on the subject. The seminar saw hundreds of participants from different schools across the country which are members of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya ( JNV) scheme. Students from rural areas spoke on how JNV has brought about a change and offers a ray of hope for them. The Indian School and Kendriya Vidyalaya were the only 2 schools invited from the New Delhi region.

Pranati opened her speech with a memorable and extremely apt quote of John F. Kennedy for the occasion. It went "Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each one of us, there is a private hope and dream, which fulfilled can be transformed into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation."

Aishwarya complemented Pranati, "We need education by which a strength of character and mind are formed and the soul is purified."

Besides Aishwarya and Pranati, 2 other students were also invited to attend the Meet and visit the exhibition. Unusual rural Indian folk dances presented on the occasion were a special treat for our eyes!

Mathematics' teacher- workshop for primary teachers by Oxford University Press

In view of some recent changes in the methods of teaching mathematics as well as it's curriculum, a workshop was organized specifically for teachers of classes 1 to 5 at Navy Children School, Chanakyapuri on 19 November, 2011. Primary teachers, Ms. Jayanti Dwivedi, Ms. Farzana Zafar and Ms. Minoo Sethi represented our School.

The workshop was conducted by Ms. Aashalata Badami, a noted teacher-trainer, known for her exciting and novel methods.The workshop began at 8:30 am and continued until 1:30 pm with a tea break in between.

We were told that all concepts can be taught using what was termed, an E-L-P-S sequence. This helps the students in moving from the concrete to the abstract.

For example, a child may not fully comprehend the noting 'x' for multplication easily. It will greatly help if he is given a chance to assemble 3 groups of 2 water bottles each and see for himself the product, namely 6 bottles that evolves. In a classroom this opportunity may not be always feasible, so it can be demonstrated by the teacher and reinforced by articulating ( through language ) what was done and ably supported on by the use of pictures. Similarly several other topics were discussed with the expert like decimals, place-values geometry, fractions and division. We were told that the delivery of any topic involves three stages, namely 'Concept-building', 'Drill and Practice' and 'Problem-Solving'.

The number of periods per topic to be taught should be ideally broken up into 3 equal segments so that each stage can be effectively tackled. 'Concept-building' must be aided with innovative activity so that the foundation set is robust. Thereafter practise must also be profuse .

Excursion to Places of Worship , 16 - 18 November 2011

Excursion to Places of Worship

On 16 and 18 November, 2011, the children of classes 1 and 2 accompanied by their class teachers went for an excursion to different places of worship. Energetic and excited in bracing weather, we boarded the buses and started for our first halt, a Gurudwara at nearby Lajpat Nagar. We all stepped in only after taking off our shoes and covering our heads. We were seated in the main hall where the children were shown how prayers are offered at this Sikh place of worship. Some of the children were quick to inform the teacher how they had been before and shyly asked if they could now have prasad! Needless to say everyone enjoyed the delicious prasad.

We then proceeded to our next stop, the Iskon Temple. There a lady staff member patiently spoke to the children about Lord Krishna and his incarnations. The children were naturally animated and interacted enthusiastically. They were specially attracted to the large, resplendant idols of the popular Hindu God through his childhood and thereafter. A highlight was a robotic film on Swami Vedanta Prabhupada who played a significant role in spreading the message of Krishna in the west.

After this we went to a mosque in Defence Colony. Unfortunately, we fell short of time and could show the children the place from only the outside.

This is an early attempt to introduce to the children to the fact that we live in a diverse society where there is a space and respect for each. We hope that they will grow with sensitivity and will recognise the call to preserve this unique character of our country.

Basketball Invitation Tournament

Our School participated in the 27th Daulat Ram Memorial Basketball Inter-school Tournament which is being held at New Green Field School, Saket between 22 November and 30 November, 2011. Of a total of 9 pools and 27 teams have signed up to play from schools across Delhi. Our school is a part of Pool D and played Green Fields School Safdarjung on 22 November. Our children were well-prepared and their determination earned them their comfortable win of 24-09. The following students participated in the match.
