On 2 June 2026, Devika Kapur and Aaishi Sengupta of class 9, accompanied by their teacher, Ms Kajal Soni, stepped into the bustling premises of GOONJ in Sarita Vihar. The visit was part of The Indian School Citizenship Programme, designed to nurture empathy, social responsibility, and active citizenship.
The organisation’s warehouse was alive with purposeful movement: sacks of donated clothes stacked neatly, volunteers bent over tables sorting books and toys, and the rhythmic sound of packaging tape sealing cartons. Into this hive of activity, the students carried the School’s collective contribution — clothes, books, toys, and other essentials gathered through a community drive.
Watching their donations being received and carefully sifted gave the students a quiet yet powerful sense of fulfilment. Each folded shirt, each labelled book seemed to carry a story of kindness. They realised that even the smallest act of sharing could ripple outward, touching lives they might never meet, and reinforcing values of compassion and gratitude.
During an orientation session, the students listened intently as GOONJ’s team explained its mission: addressing basic needs while preserving dignity and fostering self-reliance. They observed the meticulous process of sorting and packaging, noting how respect and sensitivity guided every step. What struck them most was the insistence on quality — that every item passed on should be worthy of the person receiving it.
The visit was more than an excursion; it was an awakening. Surrounded by the hum of humanitarian work, Devika and Aaishi glimpsed what responsible citizenship looks like in practice. They returned with a renewed commitment to contribute meaningfully to society, carrying with them the conviction that compassion, when translated into action, can build a more inclusive and equitable world.
