Citizenship Programme initiative: Class 7 students turn Math teachers at the neighbourhood MCD primary school
On 29 April 2026, a group of 5 students from Class VII of The Indian School, accompanied by their Math teacher Ms Sandhya Batheja, visited the "MCD Primary School, Sadiq Nagar" as a part of the School Citizenship Programme. The participants included Aarav Dhiman (VII A), Aadyant Pandey (VII B), Suhani Priya (VII), Pahal Jain (VII), and Evantik Singh (VII E). This initiative aimed to sensitise the students to the realities faced by those in government schools, fostering a deeper sense of empathy and gratitude for their own educational privileges.
The visiting students took on the role of math educators for Class V, utilising "teaching learning materials" crafted from low-cost and eco-friendly recyclable materials. The session focused on making complex concepts accessible through a series of mathemagical games. Key topics included prime and composite numbers, which were simplified through interactive sorting, and engaging drills for the divisibility rules of 4, 5, and 9. Furthermore, games centred on even and odd numbers helped the younger pupils grasp the logic behind numerical parity effortlessly.
A major highlight of the visit was the "Tangram Puzzles" session, which caught the special attention of the Class V students. These geometric puzzles allowed the children to explore spatial relationships and shapes in a hands-on, enjoyable way. To gauge understanding, short question-and-answer sessions were held after each activity as part of the assessment. Students who provided correct answers were rewarded with small tokens of encouragement, such as sweets and stationery, which added an element of excitement to the learning process.
The visit proved enriching and stimulating for the Class VII participants. By observing the limited resources of the primary school, the students expressed profound gratitude for their own School environment. Additionally, stepping into the role of teachers allowed them to develop professional empathy, realising that teaching is a demanding profession requiring patience and adaptability.
The interaction was a resounding success, leaving the pupils of the MCD Primary School with new mathematical insights and the visitors with a renewed perspective on social responsibility.
