Class 12 students attend a Physics Workshop, The Unseen Web: Currents & Magnetism
On 22 July 2025, four students, Ohaid Khan (XII), Dyutikana Sengupta (XII), Madhav Sharma and Shashwat Banerjee (XII), attended a Physics workshop titled “The Unseen Web: Currents & Magnetism” at Birla Vidya Niketan. They were accompanied by their teacher, Ms Archana Raichandani. The session was conducted by Ms Pragya Nopany.
Through the workshop, several hands'-on experiments helped illuminate the practical applications of electricity and magnetism. In one experiment using wheat dough, students observed how changes in the dough’s length and cross-sectional area affect resistance, altering the brightness of an LED, effectively demonstrating the dough’s ability to act as a variable conductor. In another experiment, a fresh cell setup showed how electrons move from a NaCl solution to charcoal, lighting up an LED through an electrochemical reaction. They also witnessed powdered particles rotating in saltwater above a magnet, which provided a visual understanding of the interaction between magnetic fields and moving charges, a perfect application of the right-hand rule. Further, by comparing series and parallel bulb circuits, the students explored how voltage and current behave differently in each configuration, and how these differences impact bulb brightness and circuit functionality.
It was highly engaging and offered an insightful exploration of real-world Physics concepts through interactive live demonstrations. These demonstrations made abstract textbook concepts tangible and significantly deepened their conceptual understanding. They look forward to participating in more such enriching and experiential learning opportunities in the future.
