Exciting Week of Self Discovery in Pre Primary
The little ones of Pre primary embarked on the new academic year amidst a vibrant celebration of curiosity, creativity and personal growth. Through a thoughtfully curated series of immersive self-discovery activities, our youngest learners were welcomed into an environment of exploration and expression, laying a strong foundation for their emotional, social and creative development in the early years.
The self-discovery journey commenced with engaging circle time discussions, where the children were encouraged to share their likes, dislikes, favourite things and future aspirations. This interactive platform enabled them to express themselves freely while fostering a sense of comfort and belonging within the classroom. As the discussions unfolded, the children began identifying their own “superpowers.” It was heartening to hear affirmations such as “I am caring,” “I am responsible,” and “I am a good friend,” reflecting the development of self-confidence and a positive self-image.
This was followed by an art-integrated craft activity designed to reinforce these concepts. Each child decorated a tie-shaped cut-out using vibrant origami paper through tearing and pasting techniques. These ties symbolised their unique qualities, and the children proudly carried them home as tangible representations of their strengths.
Another engaging activity, “Little Minds, Big Dreams,” encouraged the children to reflect on their aspirations and future goals. During group discussions, they shared a delightful range of dreams. Some envisioned becoming pilots or doctors, while others imagined following in their parents’ footsteps or living in whimsical worlds filled with ice cream and play! This was complemented by a colouring worksheet featuring oversized glasses, symbolising their big dreams and visions. The activity effectively nurtured imagination, creativity and self-expression.
The activity titled “Me in the Making- My Self-Discovery Journey” introduced a unique and imaginative dimension. Each child was given a sheet depicting half his or her face and were invited to complete the other half. This exercise not only stimulated observation and creativity but also encouraged the children to connect with, and express their emerging sense of identity.
The self-discovery worksheets, including “Little Minds, Big Dreams” and “Me in the Making,” will be carefully preserved in a special album, creating a longitudinal record of each child’s growth over their 14-year School journey. These will serve as cherished keepsakes, enabling students to revisit and reflect on their early thoughts, dreams and creative expressions in the years to come.
Music and movement were seamlessly integrated into the programme through rhymes centred on self-awareness, such as “I Am Special,” reinforcing the value of individuality in an engaging and joyful manner.
A key highlight of the week was the activity named “My Special Box” that was conducted over four days. Each child brought a beautifully decorated box made from recycled materials, containing items of personal significance, such as a favourite toy, a self-made drawing, a preferred colour object, a fruit (real or toy), or other cherished belongings. The children enthusiastically presented their boxes to their peers, sharing personal stories and preferences. This activity significantly enhanced their confidence, communication skills and both intrapersonal and interpersonal development.
Self-Discovery Week proved to be an enriching and meaningful experience. It enabled children to explore their identities, express themselves with confidence, and grow emotionally and socially within a nurturing and supportive environment.
