'Project YES': Empowering young environmental stewards at School

On 8 May 2025, The Indian School under the aegis of the School Citizenship Programme proudly hosted the inaugural workshop of Project YES: Youth for Environmental Stewardship, a transformative initiative by Chintan Environmental Research. Chintan, a renowned gendered Circular Society Do-Tank with over 25 years of expertise in sustainable waste management, has been at the forefront of environmental advocacy in collaboration with leading institutions such as UNEP, NDMC, MCD, Swachh Bharat Mission, and the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.

The workshop engaged 161 students from class VIII in an immersive, hands'-on learning experience addressing four urgent environmental themes: textile waste, air pollution, e-waste, and biodiversity.

The session commenced with an engaging multimedia presentation that introduced students to the environmental challenges shaping our world today. Real-life examples and interactive discussions helped students reflect on how everyday choices affect the planet, inspiring them to think critically about sustainability.

As a collaborative activity, students conducted micro-research within School and the community. They identified local sources of textile waste, air pollution, and e-waste, gaining firsthand insights into the causes and consequences of these pressing issues.

Guided by the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) framework, the students developed actionable solutions to tackle the environmental challenges they observed. Their initiatives included establishing textile recycling bins on the School campus, planning e-waste collection drives in collaboration with parents and the local community, and designing and promoting awareness campaigns on air pollution and its health impacts.

Students prepared presentations to communicate their findings and solutions, thereby honing their advocacy skills and reinforcing their role as youth leaders for environmental stewardship.

We thank Chintan for this meaningful partnership and look forward to more such enriching collaborations in the future.
