Teacher workshop on Storytelling as Pedagogy
A workshop titled 'Storytelling as Pedagogy' was held on 11th September, 2025 featuring two distinguished speakers: Professor Ramanujam Meganathan, Professor of English at NCERT, and Ms Monisha Sabharwal, Curriculum Innovator, Entrepreneur, and Co-founder of The Weaving Wonders.
The session opened with a warm welcome to the guests, who were presented with specially curated hampers and planters. To energise the participants and set a collaborative tone, an interactive ice-breaking activity, Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes, was conducted, in which theteachers participated enthusiastically.
Professor Meganathan led the first session, focusing on designing effective lesson plans using the 5E Model—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. He also emphasised vocabulary development through the lexical approach, stressing its importance in fostering language skills and conceptual understanding.
Ms Monisha Sabharwal’s session explored the role of storytelling across disciplines and its capacity to make learning engaging and meaningful. She posed the question, “Why storytelling?” and brought it to life by narrating The Best Nest by Laura Datta and Matt Buckingham, using voice modulation and props to illustrate storytelling techniques in the classroom.
In the later part of the workshop, Professor Meganathan conducted an interactive group activity in which each group received two stories for analysis and reflection—a strategy he underscored as essential for deep learning. This was followed by a creative Word Web activity, where participants derived new words from a root word, encouraging vocabulary enrichment and collaborative thinking.
The workshop concluded with a group photograph, capturing the spirit of engagement and enthusiasm. Overall, the workshop enriched pedagogical practices and reinforced storytelling as a powerful educational tool that fosters imagination, critical thinking, and holistic learning.
