As a part of Science Week, an engaging and informative session on “Plastic and Its Recyclability” was conducted on 21 August for the students of Classes V to VIII. The session was led by Ms Neha Maurya, Polymer Chemist at IPEC, Mumbai, who introduced the students to the fascinating world of plastics, their properties, applications and ubiquitous presence in everyday life.
The session explored the types of plastics, plastic waste, its environmental impact and the importance of responsible plastic management. Students were introduced to the Resin Identification Codes (RICs) used to classify different plastics, including PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene), PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene), PP (Polypropylene) and PS (Polystyrene). They learnt how these codes facilitate the identification, segregation and appropriate recycling of plastic waste.
The significance of the 3Rs- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, was highlighted, encouraging students to rethink their everyday consumption habits and make more sustainable choices. The interactive nature of the session enabled students to connect scientific concepts with real-world environmental challenges, while fostering awareness about waste segregation, recycling and the responsible use of plastics.
The workshop successfully sensitised students to the environmental consequences of plastic waste and empowered them to adopt eco-conscious practices. It reinforced the message that informed choices and responsible action, even at an individual level, can contribute significantly towards building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future.
